The 2021 TPWGC Club Championship is now in the books.
The courses are being prepared for the upcoming Farmers Open and conditions were as expected.
Fairways and greens were in great shape but the rough was tall and wet. It presented a true test of strength to muscle your way out of it . That’s after using your hide and seek skills as the golf balls landing off the fairway seem to immediately disappear. Add to that cold, damp weather and the courses played even longer and tougher than usual. Or was just that me?
The tournament began with 79 competitors spread over 3 divisions with 2 flights in each division.
After Day 1
Apparently conditions were not as tough for some as we had 2 players shoot in the 70’s and 5 players scoring in the 80’s, all coming from the first flights of each division.
Now a quick recap of scoring for Day 1
Open Division- First Flight
Jan Kelleher and Deb Patterson ended the day tied for the lead, both shooting a 78. Sherri Dean was right behind them with an 81.
Open Division- Second Flight
Eung Jeong took a commanding lead with a 94, 7 shots better than the next 2 competitors who were tied for 2nd with scores of 101.
Senior Division- First Flight
Susan Wellersieck lead this flight carding an 86, giving her a 9 shot lead.
Senior Division- Second Flight
Susan Kwak shot 97, creating a 6 shot lead over the two players tied for 2nd with scores of 103.
Super Senior Division- First Flight
Michiyo Nakamura had a great start to the tournament with an 84, a 6 shot lead over 2nd place.
Super Senior Division- Second Flight
Marilyn Felfe and Christy Smiley both recorded a 101 on day 1 which gave them a 7 shot lead over the rest of the competitors in this flight.
And the winners are
The 2021 TPWGC Club Champion
Deb Patterson captured the club championship by edging out Jan Kelleher by 1 shot, a birdie on the last hole. Her score over the 2 rounds was a 162.
Open Division
Open Division- First Flight
Jan Kelleher took first place in this flight with a total of 163 as Deb Patterson could not win the championship and the flight.
Open Division- Second Flight
Jeami Kang moved up one spot to win this flight with a total of 204.
Senior Division Champion
Susan Wellersdieck played even better in round 2, winning the Senior Division by 27 strokes with a total of 167.
Senior Division- Second Flight
Susan Kwak maintained her first round lead to win this flight with a total of 205
Super Senior Division Champion
Michiyo Nakamura did not let a double digit score on 16 derail her path to becoming the Super Senior Division Champion. She finished strong and won this division with a total of 175.
Super Senior Division- Second Flight
Despite double digit scores on 9 and 15 for Marilyn Felfe, her and Christy Smiley recorded the same score on day 2. They share 1st place for this flight with totals of 213.
